Bring Your Lunch — Accessible, delicious recipes just made lunchtime a lot more exciting for my family
My family’s lunchtime luck has changed since I got this book. Califia Suntree offers fantastic ideas for meals that would be good for lunch or any time. For me, the “riffs” on the ubiquitous mayo-celery-tuna salad and the homemade salad dressing ideas )ranch, lemon miso, sesame, poppyseed) make this book worth the price. The recipes range from classic “American” (mac and cheese, meatloaf, tuna salad) to exotic (borscht, Indonesian fried rice, ceviche, empanadas), but all use accessible ingredients. Many are heavy on the vegetables, and all use healthy ingredients. For example, the base for the ranch dressing is yogurt rather than mayo/sour cream. As far as selection, the offerings include everything from last-minute lunches that seem well planned rather than pulled together; salads; soups; sandwiches; hot entrees that might be freshly made or made from leftovers; freezer meals; and desserts.A lot of times, I have looked at our potential lunch offerings and resignedly give my son, who’s in middle school, lunch money because he’ll probably find something more interesting in the school cafeteria. I’m sure this is going to be happening a lot less frequently, now.Thank you, Califia Suntree!

    I love this book
I found this in the library and after about 5 minutes I came right over and bought it. This has GREAT tips for simplifying homemade lunches, the recipes are easy and tasty and the infographics are GREAT. This techniques also apply to dinner if you’re single or a light eater.

Possibly best suited for those new to cooking and preparing their own food?
I held high hope for this book as I’m always looking for ways to enliven my kid’s and hubby’s options for lunchbox fillers at school and work. It has a good, clear and easy to read lay out and I did find the “Brown baggers oath” amusing. Unfortunately, these were the only positives I could find.Sadly this book comes across as a little too childish for me, possibly because I already know how to cook, prepare food, make lunches, etc. I feel this book would be better suited to a young adult just starting out and having to look after themselves or similar novice to the food prep and cooking world.I also found the suggestions on best containers more an advertisement for specific brands of containers more than any actual helpful advice on the best containers to use.Sadly, I got so annoyed with the very basic, childish instructions throughout the introduction that I found it a great struggle to even make it to the recipes. When I go there I would them rather unappealing and more complicated than I felt they needed to be.I am sure this book will find an audience for those with no clue about cooking or preparing food for themselves, but for an old veteran at cooking like myself, I found it a very unappealing book.

Good idea as a recipe book, not practical for work lunches
http://wp.me/p4Xyys-dZ Here is the link to my full review at Januarygray.netI received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I liked the recipe ideas, but they are not practical for a work lunch.

I was excited to read this book because I am always looking for interesting ideas for my lunch box. I try to eat 5-9 fruits and veggies a day and keeping my lunch interesting and yummy requires a bit of forethought. They ideas were particularly useful, especially for young people who haven’t had the chance to learn how to cook. The sections on “The Freezer is Your Friend” (preparing meals in advance and organizing your freezer, “Ditch the Vending Machine” for homemade snacks, as well as “The Lunch Larder” which contains recipes for homemade dressings and mayonnaise. There is a chapter that helps you use leftovers, and it is divided by foot item, i.e. pasta, chicken, beef, vegetables etc. Some recipes I’m dying to try: Gold Beet and Carrot Cold Borscht, Gingery Pecan-Cranberry Granola Bars and and Chile & Cherry Brownie Bites. There does seem to be quite a lot of explanation in this book as opposed to photographs (there could be more) but overall I really like this cookbook, together with the conversion chart at the end (I don’t have to go searching through the internet with flour on my hands!). I would enjoy having a hard copy of this book!

Breaks you out of your lunch rut
It breaks you out of “oh what sandwich will I make myself today?” and throws you into all sorts of new ideas. Vietnamese wraps, lamb and yogurt pita and more. Plus, it’s a fun read. My only wish is that it were out in hardback!
